About the Image Compressor

This image compressor reduces file size while keeping the image looking right at normal viewing size. Dimensions are unchanged — only the stored data shrinks — which is what gets a photo under an upload limit or off a page's critical path.

An image compressor addresses the single biggest cause of slow pages. Images are usually most of a page's weight, and an uncompressed photograph can easily be ten times larger than it needs to be for the size it is displayed at.

Compression discards detail the eye does not notice at normal viewing distance — fine gradations in a sky, texture in a shadow. Cut too far and you see blocky artefacts around edges; the level here targets a substantial reduction while keeping the image acceptable in normal use.

Dimensions are not changed, so layouts do not shift. If an image is also much larger than the space it fills, resize it first and then compress — that combination gives far bigger savings than compression alone. Faster images improve Core Web Vitals, which feeds into search rankings.

How does image compression work?

How much smaller will my image get?

It depends entirely on the original. A photograph straight from a camera or phone often drops by half or more, because it was saved with far more quality than a screen needs. An already-optimised image will barely change.

Will the image visibly degrade?

Not at normal viewing size, which is what the compression level here targets. Push compression too far and you get blocky artefacts around high-contrast edges — most visible on text and sharp graphics, least on photographs.

Should I resize as well?

Usually, and it helps more. Serving a 4,000-pixel photograph into an 800-pixel slot wastes most of the file whatever the compression, so resize first and then compress.

Why does this matter for my site?

Because images are usually most of a page's weight, and Largest Contentful Paint — one of the Core Web Vitals Google measures — is very often an image. Cutting image bytes is the highest-leverage performance work available on most pages.
