A color scheme generator takes the one colour you have already committed to and produces the others that go with it. The rules are geometry on the colour wheel rather than taste, which is why the output looks deliberate instead of approximate.
Each rule has a different character. Analogous uses neighbouring hues and feels calm and cohesive. Monochromatic varies only lightness and saturation, which is the safest route for an interface. Triadic takes three evenly spaced hues for something vivid. Complementary takes opposites for maximum contrast, and split-complementary softens that pairing so it is easier to live with.

Which rule should I choose?
Monochromatic for an interface, where you want the colour to stay out of the way. Analogous for something cohesive with a little more range. Complementary or split-complementary when you need a genuine accent that draws the eye to one action.
Does this give me the greys and neutrals as well?
No — it produces the harmony set for your base colour, not a complete design system. Pick neutrals separately, and consider tinting them very slightly toward your primary so they read as intentional rather than dead grey.
How is this different from the colour palette generator?

How many colours should an interface actually use?
A primary, one accent, and a range of neutrals is enough for most products. The failure mode is not too few colours but too many near-duplicates, which is what happens when each new screen picks its own shade.
