About the Sentence Counter

This sentence counter counts the sentences in a text, reports the average length, and lists each sentence separately so overlong ones are easy to find. Abbreviations and decimals are handled so they do not split a sentence incorrectly.

A sentence counter is an editing tool more than a counting one. Average sentence length is one of the strongest signals of how readable prose is — much above 25 words and text starts to feel heavy no matter how simple the vocabulary.

Listing sentences individually is where the value sits. A good average can hide a 60-word monster next to several short ones, and seeing them separately makes the offender obvious. Variety matters too: alternating short and long reads far better than a uniform stream.

Detection is not naive full-stop splitting. Abbreviations such as Dr. and e.g., decimal numbers, and ellipses all contain periods that do not end a sentence, and are treated accordingly.

How to use the Sentence Counter

  1. Paste your text. Enter the passage or document.
  2. Read the count. See how many sentences the text contains.
  3. Check the average length. Compare against roughly 15 to 20 words for readable prose.
  4. Find the long ones. Scan the sentence list and split anything unwieldy.

Frequently asked questions

How does it decide where a sentence ends?

By sentence-ending punctuation, while allowing for abbreviations, decimals and ellipses that contain periods but do not end a sentence.

What is a good average sentence length?

Roughly 15 to 20 words for general readability. Consistently above 25 makes prose feel heavy regardless of vocabulary.

Why list each sentence separately?

A reasonable average can hide one 60-word sentence. Seeing them individually makes the problem sentence obvious.

Does it handle abbreviations like Dr. correctly?

Yes. Common abbreviations are recognised so they do not split a sentence at the wrong point.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Analysis runs entirely in your browser.
