About the Classic Cipher Tool
This cipher encoder handles the classic substitution ciphers — ROT13, Caesar with any shift, Atbash and Vigenere with a keyword — in both directions. Intended for puzzles, teaching and capture-the-flag challenges, not for protecting anything.
A cipher encoder applies the classic substitution schemes that form the historical foundation of cryptography and remain the standard teaching examples. Caesar shifts each letter a fixed distance; ROT13 is Caesar with a shift of 13, which makes it its own inverse; Atbash reverses the alphabet; Vigenere uses a repeating keyword so the shift varies per position.
None of them offers real security. Caesar has 25 possible keys and falls to brute force instantly, Atbash has no key at all, and Vigenere — unbreakable-looking for three centuries — yields to frequency analysis once the key length is found. They are puzzles and history, not protection.
Where they genuinely earn their place is in puzzles, escape rooms, CTF challenges and teaching. ROT13 also still appears online as a spoiler shield, obscuring text from a casual glance without pretending to be secret.
