About the Number to Words Converter
This number to words converter writes any figure out in full English words, handling large values, decimals and currency amounts. It is what cheques, contracts and formal invoices require alongside the digits.
Converting a number to words is a legal formality in several places. Cheques, contracts and formal invoices state the amount in words as well as figures, because words are much harder to alter — adding a zero to a digit is trivial, rewriting "four thousand" is not.
The awkward parts are hyphenation and the word "and". Twenty-one takes a hyphen, and British English writes "one hundred and one" where American English writes "one hundred one". Getting those wrong in a contract looks careless.
Currency amounts have their own convention, usually the major unit in words followed by the minor unit as a fraction or in words — "four thousand two hundred pounds and fifty pence". Handled here so you do not have to compose it by hand.

Frequently asked questions
Why do cheques need the amount in words?
Words are much harder to alter than digits. Adding a zero to a figure is trivial; rewriting the written amount is not.
Does it use British or American style?
British style includes "and", as in "one hundred and one". American style omits it. Both conventions are common and the output follows the selected style.
Are decimals handled?
Yes. Decimals and currency minor units are written out alongside the whole amount.
How large a number can it convert?
Well into the billions, which covers any practical financial or contractual figure.
Is my input uploaded?
