About the Text Translator
This text translator uses the translation capability built into your browser where one is available. Where it is not, it falls back to a small built-in phrase list, so treat it as a convenience rather than a full translation service.
A text translator is genuinely useful for comprehension: understanding a foreign-language email, a review, a document or an error message. For that purpose machine translation is more than adequate and has been for years.
It is far less reliable in the other direction. Text you produce and publish carries your reputation, and machine translation regularly gets tone, formality and idiom wrong in ways that are invisible unless you speak the language. Anything customer-facing needs a human translator or at minimum a native-speaker review.
Formality is the specific trap. Languages with distinct formal and informal registers — German, French, Japanese, Spanish — do not reliably pick the right one, and getting it wrong reads as either rude or oddly stiff. Translate to understand freely; translate to publish carefully.

Frequently asked questions
Which browsers can actually translate here?
Only those that expose a built-in translation API to web pages — recent Chrome builds, in some versions behind a flag. Everywhere else the page falls back to its own small phrase list.
What does the offline fallback cover?
A short set of common greetings across ten of the listed languages, and no more than that. If your text comes back looking unchanged, that means the phrase was not in the list rather than that it needed no translation.
Why are more languages listed than the fallback covers?
The picker reflects what a browser translation API may support. The built-in fallback is much smaller, so the two do not line up — which is worth knowing before you rely on a particular pair.
Should I use this for anything I publish?
No. Machine translation is genuinely useful for understanding a foreign-language email or review, but text you publish carries your reputation and needs a human translator or a native-speaker review. For serious translation work, use a dedicated service rather than this page.
Is my text sent to your servers?
No. Whichever path runs, it runs in your browser — we receive nothing.
