Asking what your IP is means asking what public address your traffic appears to come from. Your device holds a private address on the local network; the address the wider internet sees belongs to your router or your provider, and that is the one shown here.
The usual reason to check is verification. After connecting to a VPN, this tells you whether traffic is actually being routed through it — if the address and country are unchanged, the tunnel is not carrying your traffic. Reliable at country level, usually right about the city, and not a street address. It resolves where your provider routes the address, which can be a different city entirely on mobile networks.
Can I look up an address other than my own?
Yes, enter any public IP address. Private ranges such as 192.168.x.x will not resolve, because they exist only inside local networks and are not routable.
Is this how I check my VPN is working?
Yes, and it is the quickest check available. If the country and provider shown are the VPN's rather than your own, traffic is going through the tunnel. Seeing your real provider means it is not.
Where does the data come from?
A third-party geolocation service, queried when you load the page or submit an address. That means the address being looked up is shared with that provider, which is unavoidable for this kind of lookup.
What can a website tell about me from my IP?
Roughly your region and your provider, which is enough for country-based content and fraud checks and not enough to identify you personally. Your provider, however, can link the address to your account.
