A Morse code translator converts each character to a pattern of short and long signals — dots and dashes. Designed for telegraph keys in the 1840s, it survives because it needs almost nothing: any medium that can be switched on and off carries it, whether that is radio, a torch or a tapped pipe.
The lengths are deliberate rather than arbitrary. E, the most common English letter, is a single dot; rarely used letters get longer patterns. That frequency weighting made real telegraphy substantially faster and is an early example of the same idea behind modern compression.
It remains in genuine use in amateur radio, aviation navigation beacons and as an emergency signal — SOS, three dots, three dashes, three dots, chosen because the pattern is unmistakable even to someone who knows no other Morse.
