About the Character Counter
This character counter reports characters with and without spaces, plus letters, numbers, spaces and words, updating as you type. It is aimed at hard platform limits where the exact count matters rather than an approximate word total.
A character counter is what you need when a platform enforces an exact ceiling: 280 characters for a post, around 160 for a meta description, 60 for a page title, 150 for an Instagram bio, or a database column that truncates without warning.
Both totals are shown because platforms differ on whether spaces count. Social networks and SEO fields count everything including spaces; some academic and form limits exclude them. Guessing which applies is how copy ends up cut off in a search result.
The letter, number and space breakdown is useful for validating input formats — checking a reference code contains only digits, or that a field has no stray spaces. Counting happens in your browser as you type.

Frequently asked questions
Does the count include spaces?
Both totals are shown. Social platforms and SEO fields count spaces; some academic and form limits do not.
What is the character limit for a meta description?
Around 160 characters before Google truncates, though it varies with pixel width. Roughly 120 to 160 is the practical target.
Does it count emoji as one character?
Emoji are often multiple code units, so platforms may count them as two or more. Check against the platform itself for exact limits.
Are line breaks counted?
Yes, line breaks are characters and are included in the total with spaces.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser as you type.
