About the Image Converter

This image converter changes files between JPEG, PNG, WebP and BMP. It handles the transparency question properly — converting a transparent PNG to JPEG flattens it onto a background rather than producing black edges — and adds no watermark.

An image converter is needed whenever a format is refused or inefficient. Upload forms that accept only JPG, an email client that will not display WebP, a logo that needs transparency, or a photograph stored as a PNG at five times the size it should be.

The three formats have clear roles. JPG suits photographs and cannot hold transparency. PNG is lossless and does hold transparency, which makes it right for logos and screenshots and wrong for photographs. WebP is usually 25 to 35% smaller than JPG at similar quality and supports transparency, which is why it has become the default for the web.

Transparency is where conversions go wrong elsewhere. Because JPG cannot store an alpha channel, a transparent PNG converted to JPG has to be flattened onto something — handled deliberately here rather than left to produce black or fringed edges.

Is quality lost in conversion?

It depends on the direction. PNG to PNG or PNG to WebP lossless keeps everything; anything to JPEG re-encodes and discards some detail. Converting repeatedly between lossy formats compounds that, so convert from the original each time.
