About the Tip Calculator
This tip calculator works out the gratuity at whatever percentage you choose, adds it to the bill and divides the total between however many people are paying. It also rounds to a tidy per-person figure, which is usually what actually gets paid.
A tip calculator settles the two questions at the end of a meal at once: how much to leave, and what each person owes. Enter the bill, pick a percentage and set the number of people — the per-person total appears immediately, with no mental arithmetic in a noisy restaurant.
Custom percentages matter because convention varies. Roughly 15 to 20% is standard in the United States, 10 to 15% is common in the UK and much of Europe, and in Japan tipping can be unwelcome. Set the figure that fits where you are rather than accepting a preset.
Rounding is handled deliberately: the split is nudged to a clean amount so nobody is asked for £14.37. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is stored.

Frequently asked questions
What percentage should I tip?
It depends entirely on the country. In the United States 18 to 20% is the norm for table service; much of Europe rounds up or leaves 5 to 10%; in Japan tipping is not customary and can cause confusion. Check local practice rather than assuming.
Can it split the bill unevenly?
No — it divides the total equally between the number of people you enter. For an uneven split, work out each person's share of the bill first and apply the same tip percentage to each.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention in the United States is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the total is common and simply slightly more generous. Enter whichever figure you have decided to tip on.
Why round the per-person amount?
Because that is what actually gets paid. An exact share of £13.4267 is not a number anyone hands over, and rounding up slightly avoids the group coming up short.
